New Website Launch: Emancipation Park, Houston

emancipation park website designed by hodgson agency, showing the homepage and visitor information

Emancipation Park is ten acres of history, recreation, and community in Houston’s Third Ward. Founded in 1872 by formerly enslaved Houstonians as a place to celebrate Juneteenth, it remains a place to gather, play, and learn. Hodgson Agency designed and built emancipationpark.org to help visitors explore the park and find what they need before they arrive.

The design puts the park’s people and places up front. Large photographs, bold headings, and warm orange accents give the homepage a welcoming feel. Clear links lead to visitor information, facilities, events, and ways to support Emancipation Park Conservancy. The practical details are easy to find: directions, parking, hours, and how to plan a visit.

The interactive park map is a central part of the site. Visitors can pan and zoom, select a landmark, or search the facility list. Filters distinguish spaces that are free to use from those that need registration, a permit, or a rental. Each location connects to more information, helping people work out where to go and what to arrange ahead of time.

The park’s history has its own place in the experience. A virtual and audio tour brings together 18 stops and 17 recordings, covering the founders’ monuments, historical markers, gathering spaces, and other landmarks. Visitors can listen while walking through the park or explore the stories from home.

Built on WordPress, the site also brings together community stories, programs, event information, newsletter signup, and support options. It gives the Conservancy a home for the park’s everyday activity alongside the history that makes this place matter.
